XTX Markets donates £1 million to UK for UNHCR Türkiye Syria earthquake appeal

10/02/2023

In response to the devastating earthquakes which struck Türkiye and Syria this week, XTX Markets is immediately donating £1 million to UK for UNHCR’s Türkiye Syria Earthquake emergency appeal in order to help survivors.

This is the largest UK private sector donation received by the appeal to date, and will support urgent relief efforts underway by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, which has teams deployed in both countries.

In Syria, UNHCR is already working with local partners, distributing emergency supplies, such as high-thermal blankets, mattresses and other lifesaving items, and is working to mobilise additional supplies for the region. In Türkiye, UNHCR is helping the national government led humanitarian response, including supporting the provision of emergency shelter, as well as basic survival items such as blankets and cooking sets.

UNHCR teams are also conducting assessments to quickly prepare emergency response operations for the weeks and months ahead.

Emma Cherniavsky, CEO at UK for UNHCR, said: “Amid the horrendous destruction and bitter cold conditions, these first days are critical. The quick response of XTX Markets will help save and protect lives immediately, and we are hugely grateful for their generosity. This disaster has devastated many displaced families who were already vulnerable following years of Syrian conflict, as well the communities who so generously hosted them. UNHCR is mobilising rapidly and already responding in both countries, to help everyone in need.”

XTX Markets has partnered with UK for UNHCR to support global humanitarian relief efforts since 2022, when it generously donated to support emergency relief for people fleeing conflict in Ukraine.

In this latest crisis, the powerful earthquakes struck in south-eastern Türkiye and northwest Syria in the early hours of Monday 6 February local time. More than 17,000 people are estimated to have lost their lives and this continues to rise. Millions of people have been affected by this disaster, losing loved ones, their homes and livelihoods, including many refugees and displaced people living in the region.

On top of the devastating shocks, harsh winter weather with snow and icy winds continue to make conditions even more challenging for survivors and rescue efforts.
