XTX Markets donates £1.6 million to support refugees fleeing to Armenia

XTX Markets is immediately donating £1.6 million (US$2 million) to support UNHCR’s work in Armenia.

28.09.23

London-  As of 27th September, the Government of the Republic of Armenia has reported that more than 50,240 people have newly arrived in Armenia, following conflict in the Karabakh region last week. Long queues are reported at the borders with more people continuing to cross into Armenia.

People arriving at the border are mainly older people, women and children; they are traumatised, exhausted and in need of urgent humanitarian assistance and psychosocial support.

The most pressing needs include emergency shelter support, with freezing temperatures at night and limited accommodation. UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, has already provided non-food items such as foldable beds and mattresses for new arrivals, while further items are being prepared and pre-positioned as the needs continue to increase.

UNHCR is also providing technical support to assist the Government of the Republic of Armenia as it establishes registration points for new arrivals in the south-eastern provinces of Syunik and Gegharkunik, from where protection and assistance needs are also being assessed.

Emma Cherniavsky, CEO at UK for UNHCR, said: “We are deeply concerned about the increasing numbers of refugees who are fleeing into Armenia. We are so grateful for the swift response of XTX Markets, which exemplifies how private sector partnerships can play a vital role during emergency response operations. XTX Markets’ generous support will help UNHCR to provide immediate humanitarian assistance to those in need.”

XTX Markets has partnered with UK for UNHCR to support global humanitarian relief efforts since 2022, when the company donated £10 million to support UNHCR emergency relief efforts for refugees fleeing the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and again in 2023 to support victims of the Türkiye–Syria earthquakes.
